Guest Post: Swept Away with a Good Book

Welcome to Swept Away with a Good Book. Swept Away with a Good Book is a monthly feature here on Swept Away Again on the last Friday of every month, featuring other readers, bloggers and authors sharing what books, series and authors they've been swept away with while reading. Today I'm excited to feature Marcela from The Bookaholic Cat!

My button
Ally first and foremost I want to thank you for inviting me to participate in this segment. Since the moment you asked me I've been thinking about which book, series and author I should talk about and the more I think the harder it is to decided for just one book, one author or just one series. So, let me try to do my best and not extend myself to much.

Book
Last year I read a book that left me in a complete state of shock, so much that I wasn't able to read anything else for quite a while, I’m not kidding when I tell you that when I reached the end of the last page I curled up in bed for at least an hour, I couldn't do anything but think about it and how much it affected me. The book I’m talking about is The Bronze Horseman; this is the first book in the Tatiana and Alexander Series by Paullina Simons. You may be asking yourself what was so special about it. I really can’t pinpoint it; I can just tell you that it was a very beautiful book but a heart wrenching one at the same time.
The Bronze Horseman is set in Leningrad (now known as Saint Petersburg) during the Second World War, more exactly during the days around the invasion of the Soviet Union by the German Army (Nazis). It’s about the lives of two sisters (Tatiana and Dasha Metanov), their family, and friends (which includes a military man named Alexander) during the pre-war and war times, it doesn’t have a happy ending but one filled with hope for a better future.
The Bronze Horseman affected me so much that I haven’t been able to read the sequel. Call me a chicken or however you want to call me, but I need to be in an almost perfect moment to be able to let myself get lost again in Tatiana and Alexander’s world.
I have recommend this book left and right, it’s the one I recommended the most last year and all my friends that have read it have thanked me, many of those have continued with the following books and they have loved them too. I know someday during this year I’ll read the second book called Tatiana and Alexander and maybe if I’m strong enough I’ll read the third and last book of this series called The Summer Garden

Series
There are so many series I love that I can’t talk about all of them. So I’m gonna talk to you about the latest series that Swept Me Away. This one is The Riyria Revelations Series by Michael J. Sullivan. Why I loved this series? I love this series because it made me remember why I love the fantasy genre and not only it made me remember, it also made me fall in love all over again with this genre.
The Riyria Revelations is about the lives and adventures of two amazing characters Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater. Royce is a thief and Hadrian is a mercenary. One of the things I loved the most about this series and Mr. Sullivan writing is that even though the heroes are shady characters you can’t help yourself but love them, cheer for them and hope with all your heart they get the happy ending they deserve.

There are funny moments as there are sad ones. The author is not shy about killing important and loved characters but at the same time all the events make sense. All the books are pack with action, with a fluid pace and with many twist and turns that you won’t see coming. I don’t have anything negative to say about this series and its books in general. The Riyria Revelations is a series I recommend to all fantasy lovers and to anyone who wants to read great, fun and entertaining books.

Author
Now I have the same problem of which author to choose from the many great authors out there. To make things a big easier for me I’m gonna talk about the author of one of my most awaited books of the year, if not the most: Endgame. Endgame is the sixth and last book of the Sirantha Jax  series by Ann Aguirre.

Why I love her? I love her because her books are just amazing! From all the books I have read by her there is not one I can say it was a bad book or a not so good one, they all are really great books.
The creativity of Mrs. Aguirre is not only ingenious but delectable. The worlds she has created in her different series are top notch and unique. Her characters are multidimensional and evolve page after page, they are also very easy to connect and identify with them making the reading experience an even more enjoyable one.
Ann Aguirre is also a very versatile writer, she writes Science Fiction and Urban Fantasy for Adults and also has a new and very successful YA Fiction series, she is also working in a new Steampunk series. And this wasn’t enough she is always interacting with her fans on Twitter, Facebook, her blog and other social media.
I have read her Science Fiction series Sirantha Jax and her YA Fiction series Razorland and both of them made the list of my favorite series. I’m hoping to have time this year to read her Urban Fantasy series Corine Solomon. If you haven’t read anything by her it’s time for you to let yourself be Swept Away by Mrs. Aguirre’s words.

Thank you again Ally for inviting me to participate in this post, I had a lot of fun writing it and I hope you and your readers get Swept Away with any of these Good Books.

Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

'I love you. I guess that's turning out to be our little tradition, too.'

Thoughts:

I reached my goal and read 180 books, well over 180 books for the year and I'm really pleased with that. I'm just sad that I haven't been keeping up my reviews like I wanted too. However I've been really thinking about where I want Swept Away Again to go in 2012 and what direction I think would be best for it and to be honest I have to say my lack of posting through 2011 has been due to the direction I took my blog because I didn't 'keep it real'! I sadly took it in a direction I thought at the time would work and maybe it did maybe it didn't (I didn't really look at my analytics's page) but personally for me it really didn't work so I want 2012 to be about going back to the roots of Swept Away Again because I loved Swept Away Again when it first started and I feel I got wrapped up in comparing myself, my reviews and my blog with other peoples and need to set myself a part from that because it never works comparing yourself or your blog to others.

In 2012 I plan to try to:

  • Read 180 books (again)
  • Blog more
  • Get back to basics with Swept Away Again
I have more resolutions than this but these are the only ones that apply to Swept Away Again (reading/blogging).

How many books did you read in 2011? Do you have any reading/blogging resolutions?

Book Thoughts: News!

Wow! I've had an amazing weekend (you'll know this if you follow me on twitter or FB!) and today has started off the week brilliantly! But more about that in a little while, onto the book part of this post.
I received some money for my birthday on Friday so I bought myself an amazon gift card (because otherwise all my money would go on buying books!) and I ordered three books and tried to pre-order two ebooks for my kindle but for some reason I couldn't pre-order them via my gift card so I'm just buying them on their release dates instead with what's left of my gift card. I've already gotten Third Grave Dead Ahead by Darynda Jones which came out on the 2nd here in the UK and on the 7th I'll be buying Nightfire by Lisa Marie Rice which is the third and final book in Protectors series.

I'm super happy with the books I picked. Living with a House Rabbit is so informative and interesting, way better than the Rabbits for Dummies book I got last year! I finally made myself by the book version of The MacGregors Alan & Grant for our read a long, I'm half-way through and it's not how I remembered it, the Alan & Grant review will be up tomorrow on Christi's blog Smitten with Reading so don't forget to check that out and the discussion post will also be on her blog on Wednesday!
And I got the newest book in The World of Ascension, Born of Ashes which is the fourth book in the series, however I am only half-way through Wings of Fire because it was starting to feel very similar to the previous books but I want to finish it and read the next one so I'll see how it goes!
Also the Feb. Group Read has been annoucned on Vampire Book Club and it's Touch the Dark by Karen Chance which I've hard since about 2008 and still haven't read it so hopefully I will this time!
Will anyone else be reading this as well?

Now for the big, big news!

I'm engaged!

My wonderful boyfriend proposed to me on Saturday! The day after my birthday and I never suspected a thing!

It was really windy and rainy when we went out so at the time I was really confused because I only saw Ally and you and was thinking what the hell? Then Ry pulled out the ring and asked me and then went down on one knee! Of course I said yes, once I got over the shock and the giggles. It was so sweet of him! He's studying Ocean Yachting at University and those are two of his friends on his course, the one in red owns the boat and they'd been out in the wind and rain for over an hour before we went out and Ry proposed, bless them!

And my very lovely engagement ring!

[Edit: I also forgot to mention I got my job back! There are hours available for me so I can go back! Yey!]

Now stay tuned because my leap year giveaway will be going live tonight or tomorrow (I'm currently having imaging issues so may use links instead but it will be up asap!)

Absence

I'm so sorry for my absence this week guys! I had some reviews planned on a new to me series that I was looking forward to writing this week but sadly my contract at work didn't get renewed so I am once again jobless!
However, there's a twist to it and things are up in the air about it until next week so I'm in limbo right now and feeling rather unsure with how this situation will turn out.
In other news it's my birthday tomorrow! I'm looking forward to my chocolate coma as my guy is making me a nutella chocolate birthday cake.
Also I'm planning on unleashing a huge Leap Year Giveaway, most likely going live on Sunday so stay tuned!
In addition this week I've been finalising getting back on track with my degree and I'm quite excited by it. I've got the full backing from my lovely little family which really helps to know they support me with this decision. I know it's not something I've mentioned here because I've been trying to keep that sort of thing separate but it all went sort of tits up last year and it really discouraged me from continuing but I've finally decided to get on with it, so hopefully this time next year I'll be two steps closer to my final year and really close to having my degree in my pocket!
Regular blogging to commence again next week!
